Chapter Nineteen

SOMETIME DURING our flight, I fell asleep. I roused for a moment when Tom shifted me from my seat onto his lap, cradling me against his chest. Tom brushed my hair from my face and whispered, “It’s all right. Your position looked awkward, go back to sleep.”

“You’re way more comfy,” I slurred.

Tom’s chuckle reverberated through his chest, and I burrowed deeper into his embrace, barely catching Carson’s muttered, “Lovebirds.”

When I woke again, Tom climbed out of the fighter, still holding me in his arms. The light in the hangar burned my eyes, and I groaned in distress.

“Close your eyes, Berit. I’ll bring you to my quarters and have someone bring the antidote.” Tom’s breath brushed past my ear, tickling a tiny bit.

“’Kay.”

“Berrriiit!” Fleur’s purr caught me off guard. I opened my eyes, blinking against the brightness around me, when she climbed onto my chest. She scrabbled with her paws against my throat and face, then hissed. I jerked in Tom’s arms.

He stopped, addressing Fleur. “What is it, Fleur?”

“Poison in Berit. Must leave. Fleur do it.”

Before I had a chance to ask how she was going to get rid of the poison inside me, and whether it would be dangerous for her, she ripped the shirt above my left shoulder apart. Seconds later, a glob of spittle landed there and I gasped. “Fleur!”

Her paws landed next to the glob, suctioning hard. She sank her teeth into my shoulder and I screamed. Needles prickled the torn skin, and my whole body seemed to stand in flames. Despite my lax muscles, I writhed and thrashed in pain. Tom sank to the ground, trying to keep a hold on me.

I was aware of people running toward us, shouting and yelling, but the pain kept coming in waves, blocking anything else out. I consisted only of tormented muscles, stinging rushes of blood surging through me, and an all-consuming terror.

Fleur’s lips smacked as she drank my blood. Whenever the pain subsided to a tolerable level, she dug her sharp teeth deeper into my flesh and agony swept through me anew. A sob escaped my mouth, followed by the urge to throw up.

For an instant, Fleur let go of my shoulder and said, “Roll Berit over. Puking.” When nothing happened, she snarled, “Now!”

She sank her fangs back into my shoulder, and I convulsed. Someone turned me over on my side and I emptied my stomach. When I stopped sputtering and wheezing, my blurred vision cleared, and I saw a puddle of thick, green liquid. The smell churned my stomach.

I glanced up. Tom knelt next to me, a cloth pressed over his mouth, while his free hand stroked my hair. Fleur abandoned my shoulder, causing me to whimper when she withdrew her paws, and retched right into the puddle I’d left. The stench brought new tears to my eyes. My stomach heaved, but I had nothing more to give.

Fleur shook for a while, even after she stopped puking her guts out, then she trudged up to my shoulder again.
